CASE REGION NORTH
Electrical installations that restart one of Sweden's most important smelters
When Boliden rebuilds the electrolysis plant at Rönnskär, the Comfort company Nordelektro has been entrusted with carrying out complete electrical installations. A task with high technical complexity, a tight schedule and strong regional significance.
The reconstruction of the electrolysis plant at Rönnskärsverken after the fire in 2023 is a project with both industrial and regional significance. The plant, which has been in operation since 1930, is today one of the world's most efficient copper smelters and a central part of Swedish basic industry.
Technical precision in an extreme environment
Restarting an electrolysis plant is not a standard delivery. The assignment, which started in 2025 and continues in 2026, is characterized by high complexity and a schedule that leaves little room for rework. The electrolysis requires advanced DC installations where the installations must hang completely insulated above acid baths. Every joint, every suspension and every choice of material is crucial for safety. There are no shortcuts here, only accuracy and experience count.
Electrolysis places exceptional demands on design and assembly. The electrical systems must deliver stable direct current during continuous operation, in an environment characterized by corrosive substances, moisture and high safety requirements. This requires careful design, the right choice of materials and assembly work where tolerances are small.
Capacity to deliver – even when it matters most
Nordelektro is responsible for the entire chain from planning to completed installation. The work has been carried out at a high pace with clear coordination and close dialogue in the project team. To meet the needs of the assignment, the local organization has been strengthened and several new regional recruitments have been made during the year. The reinforcements have broadened the operational capacity in 2025 and added local expertise that is valuable in advanced industrial projects with high demands and tight schedules. Together, this provides a resource situation that supports the continued project work into 2026.
When the plant is put into operation, it will be with modern, reliable installations that support Boliden's focus on low-carbon copper and more sustainable metal production. The delivery confirms the ability to handle technically advanced industrial projects under strong time pressure, while maintaining safety and quality. At the same time, the project highlights the strength of combining industrial precision with local presence – being able to quickly mobilize the right expertise when it really matters.
